This Iron Mistress Bowie knife is a handmade replica of Jim Bowie's famous blade from The Iron Mistress (1952), the Warner Bros. film starring Alan Ladd. It measures 15 inches overall, with a 10-inch D2 tool steel blade and a 5-inch wood handle, and it arrives sharp in an original leather sheath.
Based on Paul I. Wellman's 1951 novel, The Iron Mistress follows Jim Bowie's life and the creation of the knife that carries his name. Since no one knows exactly what Bowie's own knife looked like, the studio had to invent one. Its art department based the design on an antique Bowie, a set designer drew the plans, and a studio prop maker built the finished knife.
The result was a big, broad clip-point Bowie with a blade of about 10½ inches and roughly 15⅝ inches overall, a lugged crossguard and a dark, shaped wooden handle with brass fittings. For generations of collectors and knifemakers, The Iron Mistress Bowie knife became the picture of what a Jim Bowie knife should be, and the distinctive movie design has been reproduced and reinterpreted ever since.
This replica keeps the Iron Mistress Bowie knife dimensions closely aligned with the film design, at 15 inches overall with a 10-inch blade. The blade is D2 tool steel, a high-carbon, high-chromium steel that holds a keen edge and resists stains better than plain carbon steel. It is not fully stainless, so wipe it dry after handling and add a light coat of oil from time to time.
The 5-inch wood handle gives the traditional look and warm grain that suit a 19th-century frontier design. Avoid soaking it, and a little oil now and then keeps the wood from drying out.
Each piece is made by hand, so small differences in finish are part of its character. The fitted leather sheath protects the edge for storage or display.
