This handmade Expendables Legionnaire Bowie knife is a replica of the large clip-point Bowie that Gil Hibben designed for The Expendables 2 (2012). Sylvester Stallone, a longtime collector of Hibben's work, commissioned him to make several knives for the first two Expendables films, and the Legionnaire was a new custom pattern created for the sequel. This version scales the design up to an 18-inch knife with a 12-inch D2 tool steel blade and a wood handle, and it arrives sharp with an original leather sheath.
Hibben's ties to Stallone's films go back to the Rambo III Bowie, and the Legionnaire carries over the same appetite for big, dramatic blades. The design is a long clip-point Bowie with an extended tip, a sharpened swedge running along the forward part of the spine, a fuller behind it, and a contoured, ridged grip that ends in a steel pommel. The licensed factory reproduction of the film knife uses a mirror-polished stainless blade of about 9½ inches, a black pakkawood handle and polished guard and pommel, for an overall length of roughly 15 inches.
This Legionnaire Bowie knife replica follows that silhouette in a noticeably bigger format. The blade is about 2½ inches longer than the factory version, and the natural wood handle gives it a warmer, more traditional look than the black pakkawood. It is handmade and is not a Hibben production piece; Hibben is credited here as the designer of the original film knife.
At 12 inches, the blade puts this piece firmly in large Bowie territory, the size where the long clip point and sweeping belly really stand out. D2 is a high-chromium tool steel known for holding an edge and resisting wear. It resists rust better than plain carbon steel but isn't fully stainless, so wipe the blade dry after handling and give it a light coat of oil from time to time.
The 6-inch wood handle gives the knife a full, hand-filling grip to balance the long blade. Keep it away from soaking and high heat, and an occasional rub of oil or wax keeps the grain from drying out. For long storage, keep the knife out of the leather sheath so moisture doesn't sit against the steel.
