Description
This handmade Damascus Bowie takes its look from the Timber Rattler Bowie knife: a long, broad blade, a solid brass guard and a wood handle sized for a full grip. It is made in the Timber Rattler style rather than by the Timber Rattler brand. The main difference is the steel. Factory Timber Rattler Bowies such as the Western Outlaw use stainless steel, while this one has a pattern-welded Damascus blade with a raindrop pattern, so no two knives look exactly alike.
Raindrop Damascus on a 12-Inch Bowie Blade
Raindrop Damascus starts as a stack of layered steels. Before the billet is forged flat, the smith presses or drills small dimples into its surface. Grinding the blade level then cuts through the layers at each dimple, leaving clusters of rings that look like drops landing on water. An acid etch darkens one steel more than the other, which brings out the contrast between light and dark lines.
The blade runs 12 inches, which puts this knife in full-size Bowie territory. It has enough length to show off the pattern from the guard to the tip, and enough reach for heavy outdoor cutting. The knife measures 18 inches overall, and it arrives sharp.
Brass Guard, Wood Handle and Leather Sheath
A brass guard sits between the blade and the 6-inch wood handle. It gives the knife the classic frontier Bowie look and keeps your hand back from the edge. Brass darkens to a warm, aged tone as it is handled. You can leave that patina as it is or polish it back to a bright finish. The wood handle gives a natural, slightly different grain on every piece.
The knife comes with an original leather sheath that is cut to fit the long blade. For care, wipe the Damascus dry after use and add a light coat of oil now and then to protect both the steel and the etched pattern. For long-term storage, keep the knife out of the leather, since leather can hold moisture against the blade.
